Portland Port has announced that the extension works to its main cruise berth, the Outer Coaling Pier, have commenced.
The start of these works follows several years of careful planning and negotiations, including discussions with the Port’s cruise line customers.
Portland is one of just three ports on the south coast of the UK that can already handle vessels up to 300m length overall (LOA) alongside. The new facility will further strengthen the port’s position by increasing the LOA limit for vessels able to berth alongside, to more than 340m.
The extension will boast a new suite of mooring bollards, high capacity pneumatic floating fenders and a minimum water depth of 9.6m CD. Plans are already underway to further increase the minimum water depth to 10m.

These works will further enhance our position in this regard and will enable an even larger range of cruise ships to be welcomed”.
As the cruise ships sailing the world continue getting larger, the new cruise berth will allow Portland to accommodate some of the biggest cruise ships in operation.
